Douglas Ko, The Kim Jong-ILL of one of Canada’s best labels, Summer Lover Unlimited Music, was over at my place this weekend (Aren’t I awesome?). Something Exclaim! won’t tell you about Doug, he always rolls with his own soundtrack. So he stepped in my place and gave me a CD to put on. I of course, ripped it to my computer and played. Doug’s mixtape begins with the russian language version t.A.T.u.’s “All The Things She Said” and ends with a remix of Ashlee Simpson’s “L.O.V.E.” I’d like to be able to tell you what else is on mixtape but none of the songs are labeled so you’ll have to guess. On the left, the brand new album by Wintermitts which is entitled Heirloom. On the right, the packet that comes with the album which contains seeds for heirloom tomatoes. There are also detailed instructions on how to grow and care for your tomatoes. It is rumoured that every tenth album comes with Marijuana seeds (kidding).

Wintermitts are fronted by Lise Monique and they play cutesy bilingual folk-pop. They’re about to embark on a cross-Canada tour. On Thursday they will be having a CD release party at the Railway Club at 9pm and it’s only $7. Stefana Fratila and LaLa will also be there to help send them off. Make it down if you can. It’ll be folktastic.

Natalie Vermeer is a local musician, writer and substitute elementary school teacher. We got her to do a mixtape this week and you can download it from here or the link on the sidebar. Here’s what she has to say about her mixtape.

“I was hoping not to recreate yet another break up mix but those really are my favourite. So here is a mix containing several songs that have ended up on every mix I’ve made in the last two years. Let’s just say this mix is the soundtrack to a story of blissed-out love that has both parties quickly snapping out of it, realizing the problems, then missing everything, but ultimately, giving up any chance of anything… to be alone.”

If you’re wondering, Natalie’s really not as emo as the mixtape or write up would suggest. This week we have another super special guest mixtape that you can download here or from that little link on the sidebar. Jeremiah aka DJ Neoteric is a Vancouver favourite and a nice guy to boot. If you don’t know what a Neoteric is (full disclosure: I had to wikipedia it) “the Neoteric period refers to avant-garde poets and their poetry, specifically those Greek and Latin poets in the Hellenistic Period (323 BC onwards) who propagated a new style of Greek poetry, deliberately turning away from the classical Homeric epic poetry.” That’s pretty intense and I can safely say Jeremiah officially has the deepest DJ name in Vancouver. You used to be able to see him spinning at clubs around town every night of the week but now he’s focussing solely on out of town gigs. Lucky for you he’s compiled a mixtape to download which includes Felix Da Housecat, Domino, Iron & Wine, The Stooges, Hot Chip and a whole lot more.

Three year anniversary of Katrina just passed and it’s looking like another hurricane is going to hit Louisiana just as the Republican National Convention gets going. Semi-related, a hurricane from New Orleans is going to hit Vancouver on Saturday October 18 as Quinton and Miss Pussycat just announced a show at the Biltmore. Quintron and Miss Pussycat call their sound Swamp Tech and it’s mostly made with an organ and an instrument Quintron invented called The Drum Buddy. On Monday September 1st, Victory Square will see a slightly higher class of people loitering around the park all day. Between 2 and 9pm, the good people at The Only Magazine will be staging the fourth annual Victory Square Block Party. This free event will feature an eclectic lineup of local bands including Mohawk Lodge, The Green Hour, Basketball and Narduwar the Human Serviette’s band The Evaporators. DJ My!Gay!Husband! and comedy troupe Bronx Cheer will attempt to pacify the crowd between sets. Block Party festival organizer Cameron Reed exudes that the event will be “a reasonably good time” for all those in attendance. On a more serious note he adds “It’ll be a great day. The weather is supposed to be amazing. All of the bands are fantastic. We’re unfortunately saying goodbye to Mohawk Lodge who are moving to Toronto and Basketball who are moving to Spain. I promise that the sprinklers will not go off.”

On Tuesday September 16 at The Plaza, Intimate Productions presents Miss Kittin and The Hacker live. You probably remember this electroclash duo from their 2001 hit Frank Sinatra. That was an expeically rough year for a lot of people so the video is below to refresh your memory. (Careful it has a couple naughty words)

Miss Kittin and The Hacker are back together and touring a live show now. I repeat, live show and not a DJ set with Miss Kittin singing over vinyl or MP3s or whatever the hell DJs play these days. Anyhow, this is probably a show you don’t want to miss. Tickets are available at Beatstreet, Vinyl and Zulu or online at Clubzone and will set you back 25 francs.

Intimate Productions, purveyors of all your house music needs in Vancouver, have recently announced the Lotus Long Weekend on Sunday August 31. This will be the five year anniversary bash of their Sunday evening parties which span over three different venues: The Lotus, Lick and Honey. To sweeten the deal (see what I did there), local tech house hero Jay Tripwire will be headlining and it will be his 10th anniversary of playing at the Lotus. Jay was unavailable for comment on this event. But if you did ask him thoughts on playing at this event, he’d probably say something really offensive and cynical, then make fun of one of the promoters and then make fun of you for asking. I will say that Tripwire is the only DJ in this town who shoplifts from 7-11 and collects Transformers. Tripwire is also closing in on his 10,000th MySpace friend. To mark the occasion, he’ll be awarding the lucky 10,000th friend $10,000 at the Lotus at the conclusion of his set…. Jay was unavailable for comment on this as well.
